If there is one thing northern Wisconsin and the Rhinelander area are known for it's fishing.
We have some of the best waters around to reel in that prize-winning fish. The great thing about fishing is it's a sport for all ages. Generations can share a day on the water together relaxing and making great memories. I'm guessing most of you have a story that starts out with, "One day when Grandpa and I were on the water..."
One of the other fun things about fishing is the challenge and thrill of hauling in the catch, especially when it comes to reeling in a musky. Did you know that the musky was officially named Wisconsin's state fish in 1955 and more world record muskies have been caught in Wisconsin than anywhere else?
If reading these stats makes you want to grab a pole and hit the water, do I have an event for you! It's the 2012 Rhinelander Toyota Hodag Musky Challenge. This year's tournament will be held Sept. 7-9.
The great thing about this catch-and-release tournament is that it takes advantage of a variety of great lakes in the area. Teams can fish Boom Lake and the Wisconsin River, Crescent Lake and Lake Julia, Moen Chain, Oneida Lake and Lake Hancock or Lake George and Lake Thompson. Which means you could fish a lake you know, or try out a new lake.
The tournament has room for 160 teams. The more teams that sign up the more money will be available for the person who reels in that prize winning musky! Registration forms are available online at the chamber's website, rhinelanderchamber.com, or you can call us at (715) 365-6374 and we'll get you the information.
Beyond the top cash prize we've got a bunch of other prizes and titles you could take home. The first person to catch a 50" musky wins a boat, trailer and truck package and each day the fisherman with the largest musky takes home a prize. The person who catches the largest northern during the tournament will also take home a prize.
The tournament wouldn't be possible without our great sponsors, Rhinelander Toyota, Shoeder's RV & Marine and Rollie and Helen's Musky Shop. In addition, we have an awesome group of volunteers who help out each year to make sure the tournament goes off smoothly. Thank you so much to everyone who supports it.
Why not try your luck and test your skills to see if you can stack up to the Hodag Musky Challenge.
