Three area students, Kendra Lehman from Crandon, Heather Zimmer from Laona, and Elcho High School student Kayla Grose, attended the 32nd Annual Wisconsin Leadership Seminar (WILS) for high school sophomores last month at Carroll College in Waukesha.

Attending sophomores, who have completed their second year of high school, are invited based on their academic achievements and potential leadership qualities. Each school in the state can nominate one student to attend at no cost to the student or to the school.

Lehman, a 4.0 honor student who will enter her junior year at Crandon this fall, said, "I learned so much during the weekend I spent at WILS. Our weekend was filled with motivational speakers, panels discussing about diversity, globalization, and volunteering."

In addition to team building acivities and focusing on their own leadership skills to learn how to use them "back at home," and the "rest of our lives," Lehman said that the hosts provided opportunities at the end of the days to relax and to have fun. Friday night, the program leaders hosted a dance. On Saturday, students presented a talent show.

WILS is a non-profit volunteer organization whose goal is to provide high school sophomores "with the opportunity and encouragement to recognize and develop leadership potential."

When the approximate 200 representatives arrived, Lehman said, "They broke us up into 26 different countries with about seven to nine kids and two staff in each country."

Lehman and Zimmer ended up in the same country group, New Zealand, as a part of the globalization package of the seminar.

WILS has existed for over 32 years in Wisconsin with emphasis on "personal responsibility, volunteerism, increased awareness of social issues, and open-minded analysis of all sides of an issue."

After the event, Lehman said, "It was a great weekend, and I'm so glad I went. WILS created a great atmosphere to be in. It was a great experience."
