Crandon wrestling team plagued by early season injuries
Vern Hollister Correspondent
Plagued by early season injuries and facing a Crivitz squad that also did not have outstanding numbers, but more than Crandon, the Cardinals wrestled the Wolverines at home Thursday evening with a Parents Night crowd in attendance. Though parents didn't witness as many matches, six, as they would have preferred, they were there to see grapplers confronting one another. After four forfeit announcements, Crandon to Crivitz, spectators cheered mightily that the Cardinals Nate Sprenger and Crivitz wrestler Tyler Osmansk at 160 pounds would get onto the mat. Osmansk took a 5-4 lead after one period, but Sprenger scored on a takedown that led to a pin at 3:05. One match victory, and Crandon trailed 24-6.
"We won four out of the six matches," Crandon coach Jeff Lehman said. "It's hard without the numbers. All we can do is win individual matches."
Jon-Bryan Shicks followed at 171. His match with Phil Dobesh lasted halfway through the second period when Shicks gained the upper hand and came up with a second Crandon pin. The weights from 160 to 215 all went the Cardinals way. They'd lost four rounds due to forfeits, but hit a solid string of four victories.
Patrick Ison and Jordan Marvin, switching weights at 189 and 215, each scored technical falls over their opponents. Ison wrestled first at 189 against Clay Dudkiewicz. Leading 7-0 after one period, Ison collected two near falls in the second period before being declared a 15-0 technical fall winner after two periods.
Jordan tackled a more experienced opponent in Kyle Myszka at 215. He scored at regular intervals on a series of takedowns until a technical fall at 17-2. With the two wins and five points each, the Cardinals trailed by two, 24-22.
Carter Weigand at 285 tried an early leg shot, but the Wolverines more experienced Sam Ermis took advantage of Weigand's down position and worked to a pin in 47 seconds. In the final on-the-mat match, Trae Blank led Josh Beyer 5-2 before Beyer caught Blank in a headlock. Blank tried to hang on, but Beyer gave Crivitz six points with only three seconds left in the second period.
