Rhinelander boys’ basketball player Chris Sykes had perhaps his best performance as a Hodag on Tuesday at Marshfield. Sykes led Rhinelander with 14 points and made two crucial plays toward the end of the game to give the Hodags an exciting 46-44 win.

“Chris had his best game ever as a Hodag,” Rhinelander coach Rich Fortier said.

A Sykes layup gave Rhinelander a 46-44 lead with less than a minute left. Marshfield had possession and one final shot to score, but Sykes came through defensively.

“On defense, Chris locked his guy down,” Fortier said.

“He took a shot, missed and Chris was there to snag the rebound and that was the game,” Fortier said.

Marshfield led 24-21 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Tigers pushed their lead to 37-30 and Fortier made a bold decision by tinkering with his lineup.

“We had kind of a weird lineup on the floor, but they made some shots and that changed the game,” Fortier said.

The Hodags went on a 9-0 run to take a 39-37 lead into the final quarter and held on to win.

“Maybe their youth kind of showed a bit at the end,” Fortier said, referring to Marshfield. “They attacked the rim and the glass pretty good, but they are not a very good shooting team and they forced some shots toward the end.”

Jordan Schmidt had 10 points and five rebounds. Mike O’Melia posted six points and five assists. Colin Dean had six points and Tyler Wilmot grabbed five rebounds. Sykes also finished with five boards.

The Hodags (4-1) will face another challenge when they welcome Wisconsin Rapids to the RHS gym on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

“We will see a better defensive team on Friday,” Fortier said. “They have Clayton Heuer, a (University of Wisconsin-Green Bay recruit) who is 6-9 and will present a challenge.”
