Oneida County will hold a public hearing Monday on proposed regulations for outdoor wood burning units.

The hearing will be held at 5 p.m. Nov. 17 in the county board room in the Oneida County Courthouse.

Last month the county’s board of health forwarded a resolution to the county board that included rules about where outdoor wood burning units can be located and how tall the stacks can be.

According to a resolution, the board of health wants all outdoor wood burning units to be located at least 200 feet away from residences not served by the furnace. The height of the furnace stack would also be regulated and owners would only be allowed to burn untreated natural wood. Owners would also have to obtain a permit to install a unit.

The county planning and zoning department would be responsible for issuing the permits and the supervisors of that department would decide the amount of the fee.

During the October meeting, Romelle Vandervest, chair of the board of health, said the committee is interested in protecting the health of persons who live in close proximity to outdoor wood burning units as well as the investment of those who purchase the units.

According to the resolution, particles in wood smoke can worsen heart conditions and cause breathing problems for those who suffer from asthma and other lung conditions.

Vandervest said the committee is hoping to give direction to those seeking to buy units so they don’t invest in a costly heating system only to be forced to move it.

After several supervisors expressed concern that the public isn’t aware of the proposed changes, the county board directed the board of health to hold a public hearing on the resolution.

The resolution is scheduled to be back before the county board in December.
