Priyanka Sikka, Emily Heideman and Alleigh Fralick all scored victories during WIAA girls’ tennis subsectionals in Stevens Point Monday and advanced to sectionals.

As a team, the Hodags, who placed third in the Wisconsin Valley Conference this season, finished tied for fifth with Wisconsin Rapids at six points. Marshfield was first (22), followed closely by Wausau West (20), Wausau East (10) and Stevens Point (8).

“As a team we had some mixed results,” Rhinelander head coach Bob Heideman said. “Because we went with our doubles lineup some players were put in tough spots. We had good effort, but had trouble getting some wins.”

Sikka, the top seed at No. 1 singles with a 24-3 record, cruised 6-0, 6-1, over Steven Point’s Kristin Arnold in her only match.

“Pri played a solid match, was patient and waited for Kristin to make a mistake,” Heideman said.

Heideman and Fralick –– who regularly play No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively –– teamed up at No. 1 doubles to beat a D.C. Everest duo, 6-3, 6-1.

“Emily and Alleigh got off to a rocky start but won a close game in the middle of the first set and played well from there,” coach Heideman said.

At No. 2 doubles, Becca Pierre and Jade Meyers won their opening match, 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) over a pair from D.C. Everest. In the second round, however, Pierre and Meyers were downed by the top-seeded Marshfield duo, 6-3, 6-1.

“Becca and Jade played with fight and energy right up to their last point,” Heideman said.

Allie Fortier closed out her high school tennis career as she fell 6-3, 6-2 to Wausau East’s Olivia Szmanda at No. 2 singles.

“Allie got a lot of balls back, but Olivia had more pace on her shots which was difficult to handle,” said Heideman.

Kelsey Ginnel lost at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1, to Marissa Lentz, of Merrill; Michelle Wanty was defeated 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles to Steven Point’s Sarah Van Ausdall; and Ashley Biolo and Kelsey Huginun were downed at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, 6-4 by Merrill’s Marissa Wilde and Krissy Gabler.

The Hodags lose two seniors from this year’s team, Meyers and Fortier.

“Becca and Allie as captains and leaders will be sorely missed,” Heideman said. “They had much to do with the success of our season.”

Sikka, Heideman and Fralick will continue their quest for state when they compete in Division 1 sectionals Thursday at Wausau East.
