Heading into Tuesday’s meet, the Rhinelander girls’ swimming team faced the daunting task of trying to topple a much larger school with a deeper talent pool. While the result didn’t favor the Hodags, Rhinelander coach Amber Laggis could take pride in her team’s effort.

Rhinelander fell to SPASH 92-78 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference meet at Stevens Point.

“Stevens Point is a huge team, they have a lot of girls swimming,” Laggis said. “For the amount of girls they have to draw from, I thought we did pretty good.”

Rhinelander gave Stevens Point a battle and came away with three first-place finishes. Carissa Stellflue won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:31.77. Laura Tracy finished first in the 100 butterfly (1:09.84). In the 200 free relay, Tracy teamed with Brenna Natrop, Erin Kindell and Jaime Herum and finished with a time of 1:52.53.

In the 200 and 500 freestyle, Tierney Edwards and Herum finished second and third, respectively. Kindell placed second in the 100 free.

Despite having about half the amount of swimmers SPASH has, Rhinelander performed well.

“It was a close meet until the end, so I was pleased with it,” Laggis said.

Next up for Rhinelander is the Husky Invite at Eau Claire North on Saturday. The Hodags have fond memories of the meet, considering they won it last season.

“It will be a good meet for the girls to drop times and have some really close races,” Laggis said. “They should swim well.”
