Three Lakes water supply given OK
By Daily News Staff
It’s now safe to drink the water in Three Lakes.
The Oneida County Health Department on Tuesday lifted the boil water advisory it implemented last Thursday after routine testing showed coliform in the water.
According to the health department, coliform bacteria lives naturally in soil and in the waste of warm-blooded animals. It can also grow as a film in water pipes. Most coliform are not harmful but the presence of coliform indicates the possible presence of other disease-causing microbes (viruses, harmful bacteria and parasites) that are often found in soil and feces.
Over the last few days, the Three Lakes Sanitary District flushed the town’s water supply and treated it with chlorine. The treatment apparently resolved the problem as consecutive tests have shown no sign of coliform remains in the water.
“Two negative water samples have been received from the lab, showing no evidence of total coliform bacteria being present in the Three Lakes municipal water supply,” said Linda Conlon, Oneida County Health Director. “Three Lakes Sanitary District has followed all protocols set forth by the Department of Natural Resources,” she added.
Since the health department first issued the advisory, residents and businesses have been sanitizing the water by boiling it for one minute.
