The Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Fill the Boot campaign was a success. For the first time the Rhinelander Fire Department participated in the nationwide effort to raise funds for the more than 800 Wisconsin families affected by neuromuscular diseases.

The firefighter’s boots were filled, over and over again, to the tune of approximately $6,000. That’s a good tune to play in hard times. The campaign ran from last Thursday through Sunday at the corner of Stevens Street and County Highway W. Firefighters manned the corner from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

When people stopped at the stoplight, firefighters ran to each car with a firefighter’s boot. Donations collected are used in the area, Rhinelander, Merrill and Antigo, for medications, wheelchairs and to send those affected to the camp at Green Lake.

Aaron Swaney was the liaison for the Rhinelander Fire Department.

“We raised $6,000, over $900 in change alone. All the shifts took part, 17 firefighters. Two retired firefighters took part as well, Dale Jefcik and Kenny Claflin.

It was a good time, almost everyone gave something. Often they would empty change from the dash. It was a good project and we plan on doing it again next year during the Hodag Country Festival. Thanks to all who contributed and to those who helped the campaign. Northway Auto let us set up on their property. Thanks to Concrete products and St. Joe’s Church as well. One last thing, thanks to our city administrator for letting us do this project.”
