New LdF tribal council in place
By Daily News Staff
The Lac du Flambeau Tribal Council has two new members.
Mike Christensen and Donna LaMere have been appointed to fill the unexpired terms of council members Tom Maulson and Jerome “Brooks” Big John, the tribe has announced.
Maulson and Big John were officially voted out of office in a special election June 10.
The special election served as Maulson’s and Big John’s appeal of the tribal council’s May 30 decision to remove them from their council positions. The council impeached both men for “failing as elected officials to place loyalty to the tribe, its constitution, laws and confidentiality of tribal information and ethical principles above private gain.”
A majority of voters confirmed the council’s decision to remove the men.
Maulson and Big John have repeatedly claimed they were targeted for removal from the council because they believe tribal president Victoria Doud’s government is corrupt. They claim Doud’s supporters are systematically removing her opponents from positions of power.
“Since the $50 million bond-loan deal had been exposed in January of this year, the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Council has lost five popular, duly elected, council members,” the men said last month. “Victoria Doud and her newly ‘Appointed Interim Council,’ which now consists of mostly Doud supporters, rules over the tribe with a goon squad at their side.”
Both Christensen and LeMere are tribal members and are longstanding residents of Lac du Flambeau.
Christensen, of Mike’s Café, has been a local business owner for 20-plus years. He currently serves on the Lac du Flambeau Town board, a position he has held for 15 years. Christensen also represented Lac du Flambeau tribal members for 6 years during the ‘90s as a Lac du Flambeau tribal council member.
LeMere owns and manages Legend’s Bar in Lac du Flambeau In addition to her seven years operating Legend’s, LeMere worked in upper management for 13 years at the tribe’s Lake of the Torches Resort Casino. She also brings to the council broad-based knowledge and experience in tribal programs and community services including tribal youth and community health programs and social services.
