RHS girls’ track places last at invite

A significant amount of success with high school track and field teams is a result of having high numbers of kids come out for the team. That just can’t be said this year for the Rhinelander High School (RHS) track and field team.

Only a dozen girls were on hand for the Hodags at the Wausau West Warrior Invitational Thursday, and the result was a last-place finish. It would seem fitting for any coach that when a team finishes last, it is a big disappointment. That is not really the case for Rhinelander.

“It is unfortunate that we only have 12 girls participating,” said RHS assistant coach Mike Shay, who guided the team Thursday night. Head coach Jim Moore did not make the trip.

“I give them (the girls) credit, though,” Shay added. “They work very hard despite the low numbers.”

Freshman Ellen Bognar finished seventh in the 55-meter dash (8.03) and 12th in the 200-meter dash (30.50).

Kelly Smek was 18th in the 400-meter dash (1:19.42), while Kelsey Daniels ended up 15th in the 800-meter run (2:59.85).

In the 1600-meter run, the Hodags’ Karina Katchko came in 11th (6:14.73), and Jen Walker was right behind in 12th place (6:28.47).

Allie Fortier raced in a pair of hurdling events by finishing 17th in the 55-meter (11.29) and 11th in the 200-meter (37.70).

Moving over to the field events, Steph Edwards was tied for ninth (4-06) in the high jump. Kaci Gruening ended up 14th (6-0) in the pole vault.

Allie Lodholz participated in a pair of events, including the long jump (14-05.50), where she placed 11th and the triple jump, in which she was 7th (30-03).

While exact point totals were not made immediately available, Wausau West came in first in the thirteen team invitational while Stevens Point was second.
