Wow! It was a wild week for weather. Warm, cold, dry, snow … and more snow. Will spring ever show up? April came in with record snow and winds. Time for our Northwoods annual cheer, “We want spring!” My sister living in Maryland is bragging about her spring tulips and daffodils and the cherry blossoms in full blossom. Mine are there, too, safely hidden beneath two feet of snow.

Tonight is a Rock ‘N Roll Benefit for the Rhinelander Soccer Club. Johnny Roberts will perform as the legendary Buddy Holly in Buddy and Beyond—A Salute to the Fifties and Sixties. Tickets are $12 each and $8 for children 12 and under and free for children under age 5. Refreshments and door prizes will be available. Call 282-6613 for more information.

The Rhinelander High School Student Council will again host a Prom Dress Exchange on Saturday at the High School from 11 to 4 p.m. The event is open to the public and there will be a large variety of prom and bridesmaids’ dresses as well as after-dinner dresses and formal attire, so come and take a look. Local businesses will be there to assist and sell prom-related merchandise. Dress sellers will receive 70 percent of the dress proceeds and the RHS Student Council receives the rest. Call Sadie at 282-5063 for information.

The Outdoor Women’s Group will meet on Sunday April 6 at 1:30 at the Langley Cross-Country Ski Trails on Hwy K, about seven miles west of Conover. Call 546-2366 for more information.

YMCA Spring II class registration is on now. The new spring session starts April 14. Now is a great time to have the kids brush up on their swimming skills.  Sign yourself up for a cycling workout to prepare yourself for biking season.

Go to www.ymcaofthenorthwoods.com for the schedule.

You can register for the YMCA sponsored Paddle and Pant event at the Eagle River High School next Saturday. The indoor running event has an early registration fee of $20 if paid before April 7.

April is National Volunteer Month.

Volunteering gives you an opportunity to change people’s lives, including your own.

You can support a cause by donating money or your time.

You can become a volunteer at any age.

Think about what really interests you as well as decide which group is most deserving of your time. Positive actions tend to be accompanied by positive feelings. This April, be the newest volunteer!
