The Rhinelander High School mock trial team captured the school’s 14th state title, and a bit of payback, on Monday.

Rhinelander defeated Shorewood, last year’s state champion, to earn another shot at a national mock trial title.

“It was a very satisfying win, said coach Kathy Vick-Martini. “Last year, we were the defending state champions and we lost to Shorewood in the finals. The kids were determined not to let that happen again.”

Students from over 70 Wisconsin high schools competed in courthouses across the state in February and the top 14 teams participated in the statewide event in Madison on March 16 and 17.

Mock trials, which follow the rules and structure of a "real" court trial, offer teams of six to twelve high-school students the opportunity to argue a case before a three-person panel of judges, composed of volunteer attorneys and jurists.

"This competitive format challenges students to develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, while also giving them unique perspectives on how our legal system works," explains Atty. Lindsey Draper, State Bar of Wisconsin Law-Related Education Committee Chair.

This year's competition was a hypothetical felony criminal case involving homicide by negligent use of fire.

This year's Rhinelander Mock Trial Team was assisted by teacher-coach Vick-Martini and attorney coaches Mike Bloom and Jim Jacobi. Members are Samantha Chavez, Marissa Hatlen, Cooper Henckel, Rahul Jain, Meagan Kelley, Eric Klemm, Britteny La Fond, Lauren Mathea and Max Sjoberg.

The Rhinelander team will represent Wisconsin at the National Mock Trial Championship in Wilmington, Delaware on May 8 - 11. A Rhinelander team won a national championship in 1989.

Anyone wishing to contribute to tournament expenses may send a check to the high school, made out to RHS Mock Trial, in care of Vick-Martini.

Warm winds carry the sounds of April
Looking for signs of spring is one of the favorite activities of many country folk this week. Although the official first day of spring is on March 20 this year, the more important beginnings of spring are not seen until the last week in March - a time when the first redwing blackbirds, horned larks, juncos and killdeers return.
