by Julie Holperin - Special to the daily news
The weather will be perfect this weekend to get outside and enjoy some winter activity. I am enjoying seeing the days stay lighter a little longer each day. Tomorrow and Saturday you and your family can participate in Wisconsin's #1 Winter Fun Festival, the 18th Annual Klondike Days, in Eagle River. The 1800's voyageur encampment is really interesting and educational. There is plenty to do indoors and outdoors for everyone so bundle up the family and participate in all the activities. The events take place at the Eagle River High School, Derby grounds and Rocking W Stables. You can call the Eagle River Chamber at 800-859-6315 or go to www.klondikedays.org for the schedule and ticket info.

Today through Monday we are all encouraged to participate in the 11th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count. To participate you can count the number and varieties of birds you see during this time period. The information recorded provides valuable research in bird populations and migration. For helpful information on how to record your tally go to the Wild Birds Unlimited website, www.wildbirdcount.org. For more info call Bob at 282-7117.
President's Day is Monday! To brush up on our U.S. Presidential history you can pick up a history book at your local library or go online to www.whitehouse.org for more history and stories. While you are at the library you can check to see if you need any tax forms for preparing your Federal or State taxes. Our family will be spending President's Day compiling our 2007 tax records-Yuk! Really looking forward to that.
Don't forget, it is a privilege and responsibility to VOTE on Tuesday in Wisconsin's primary elections. Go to any of your favorite news sources to read more about the candidates and their views on the important issues. Contact Rhinelander or Oneida County government offices if you are unsure where to cast your important vote.

Girl Scouts tour Rhinelander
The best thing about our community is the people. That's the response you will get from Girl Scout Troop 169 after they toured several downtown businesses. The trip lasted 8 hours and included tours of the library, police station, fire department, Forth Floral, Family Video, Trig's, Trig's Floral, the post office and the Daily News. At each business the girls were met with a friendly guide who patiently answered all of their questions and sent them on their way. They returned home later that day with a bag full of souvenirs and a better understanding of the community. Although when you ask the girls about the tour, they don't mention coloring books, pins or plants, they remember the smiling faces that took time to show them around. READ MORE >
