Sometimes instincts get the best of animals.

Rhinelander firefighters were called to the Wisconsin River off Marshall Street Thursday afternoon to save a dog that didn't know it wasn't duck season.

“It appears that the dog ran into the river to chase ducks and was unable to get out,” Rhinelander Fire Chief Terry Williams said.

When firefighters arrived, the dog was still in the water. Williams said there was a ledge of ice along the shore. Once the dog was in the water, the ducks flew off and the dog couldn't get back on top of the ice to make it to shore.

One firefighter suited up in a cold-water rescue suit and went in to help the struggling dog.

After the rescue, the chocolate lab, apparently unphased by the ordeal, was ready to charge back into the water when another duck flew past.

Williams said the firefighters on the scene were able to hold the dog back and prevent a repeat of the chilling events.

After the situation was straightened out, the dog was taken home.

“The dog is back with the owners,” Williams said.
