Boooooooooooo!

I love holidays but Halloween is my favorite! Halloween week has always been a special time of the year, probably because I am an All-Saints Day baby and my birthday always meant lots of candy and treats!

You better get your costumes ready quickly because the YMCA is again sponsoring their Not So Scary Halloween Trail tonight on the trail in the back. Be sure to bring a flashlight for everyone because it does get dark, and wear warm clothes under those costumes to keep your little goblins warm. The event runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be treats following the trail inside.

On Saturday, Downtown Rhinelander is hosting a special, safe Trick-Or-Treat from 2 to 4 p.m. This event was awesome last year! We want to be sure and thank all the participating businesses for inviting everyone into their businesses. Look for the orange pumpkins in the windows. Pumpkins created by our local children will be decorating the stores and the pumpkin decorating awards will be given out at 3:30 p.m. in front of Glik's.

Dr. French is offering her Second Annual Haunted Clinic at French's Homestead Veterinary Clinic at 1117 S. Oneida Ave. Free admission to the Haunted Clinic. Enter the children's and pet's costume contests. For a $5 donation you will receive a free photo and door prize. All donations benefit the Rhinelander Animal Shelter and Pet Haven Sanctuary. Bring along dog/cat food, cleaning supplies, new and old pet toys and old blankets to be donated to the shelter. Free refreshments. Call 365-7387 for more information.

The Annual Trick-or-Treat Halloween Party will be held at Taylor Park and Friendly Village on Saturday afternoon from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The residents love seeing the children and their costumes. There will be games, prizes, and boy do they have the treats! They are also collecting items for the food pantry, so put a box or two of cereal in your car now so you don't forget. Call 365-6862 for more information.

The Wausau Dance Theatre is featuring “Thrillville” on Saturday at the Grand Theatre. Performances are at 1:30 and 7 p.m. This performance features a hip-hop performance with lively Halloween characters and spooky dance numbers. There is also free family fun in the Great Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Call 715-842-0988 to order show tickets.

The Black Bear Lodge in St. Germain is hosting Oktobearfest on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fest will feature German food, music, crafts and hayrides and a beer garden for the adults. Call 715-479-5778 for more information.

The Jaycees have created another wonderful spooky, scary Haunted House. My 9-year-old son raced through it last Saturday in record time and was thoroughly spooked. The House will be open tonight, and tomorrow from 7 to 11 p.m. On Halloween it will be open from 7 to 10 p.m. and the cost is $5 each night. There will be a special “lighted night” for the little ones on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. and the cost is $3. The House is located behind GM Auto Mall on 1672 Menominee Drive.

Just a reminder when you are shopping for costumes at our area thrift shops this week to drop off cereal and peanut butter and jelly, as well as gently used children's books, for the food pantry located at St. Joe's Thrift Shop on Brown Street.

Next week is the start of a new session of programs at the YMCA of the Northwoods. Go online to preview the programs at www.ymcaofthenorthwoods.com or call 362-9622. For the kids, the basketball session will start next Saturday. Also swim lessons and classes begin for children and adults. If you are a senior call and ask about the SilverSneaker program designed for seniors dealing with arthritis. If you would like to volunteer to help with any of the programs and other activities call 362-9622.

Next week is City Cleanup in Rhinelander. Put out your tree limbs and branches, and leaves in clear bags to be picked up. Call the Public Works Department at 369-4727 to find out what you are allowed to put out.

The Rhinelander District Library is featuring a program by Ruth Hempel on Monday evening titled “Decorating your Harvest Table.” Ruth is the owner of Forth Floral and will show how to creatively decorate and accessorize your table and home for the fall season, including Thanksgiving. There is no cost and no reservations needed. Call 365-1070 for more information.

Grace Lodge will again be hosting a not so frightening Trick-or-Treat party on Wednesday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Stop in and show off your costumes in a warm and friendly environment.

The official Trick or Treat hours for the city of Rhinelander are from 4 to 7 p.m. Be sure to bring flashlights and accompany your children for safety. When driving around be extra cautious and watch out for little witches and skeletons crossing streets. When decorating your sidewalks and porches be sure to move candle-lit pumpkins out of harm's way. I see little kids every year struggling not to trip over some of the decorations, so let us think safety first.

Happy Haunting!
