Tomorrow is Sweetest Day! Celebrate with the sweetest people in your life a sweet message, flowers, candy, or treat them to their favorite ice cream. At our house it means caramel apples for everyone.

Our family traveled to Bond Falls last weekend for our annual fall hike around the breathtaking waterfalls. The drive to the U.P. is always a favorite and our kids love exploring around the waterfall rocks and on the shores of Bond Lake. You can go to www.upnorthmichigan.com for more information and directions to all of the U.P waterfalls, including Bond Falls, Copper Falls, and Agate Falls.

Tomorrow is the last Hodag Farmers' Market of the year. Come to Pioneer Park for the last of the fall produce, pumpkins and gourds. There are also several corn mazes and hay rides in our area including the Tomahawk Berry Farm and Helena's Apple Orchard in Merrill. Don't forget your camera to take pictures of your kids selecting and decorating their pumpkins.

The “Fall into Health” health fair takes place Saturday at the Lakeland Union High School from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities and screenings for the entire family will be available.

If you are a knitter in the Northwoods come to the Knitters Retreat at Whispering Pines Lodge in St.Germain starting today through Sunday. Call 715-479-7634 to see if you can still register.

The Jaycees Annual Haunted House continues this weekend. The house is located behind the Rhinelander GM dealership at 1672 Menominee Drive. The Haunted House will be open Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. this weekend, and next weekend Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Even the “Light Night” Haunted House next Sunday (Oct. 28) is really fun so come and support this harrowing house of torture. The cost is $5 per person and well worth the price. Volunteers are still needed so call Eric at 360-2899 if you can help.

The Northwoods Concert Association is hosting the Hunt Family Fiddlers on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Rhinelander High School auditorium. The concert features the award-winning family performing Celtic, bluegrass, inspirational, and popular tunes. The concert is part of the Concert Association Series and season tickets can be purchased before the concert. Admission is by season membership only. Call 362-5755 for more information.

The Pine Lake Fire Department is holding a benefit dance at the Northwoods Banquet Center in Rhinelander on Saturday night. Live music, drawings and door prizes will be provided. Call 369-9277 for more information.

The Hall-of-Wine and Cheese Tasting Gala will be held on Saturday evening at the AmericInn in Minocqua. Wine, cheese and hors d'oeuvres will be featured along with a silent auction, and more. Call 715-356-5266 for more information. The event supports the Lakeland Sharing Foundation.

Two area churches are hosting Harvest Dinners on Saturday night. The First United Methodist Church in Rhinelander is holding a turkey with all-the-fixings Harvest Dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. at their church. Call 362-2091 for ticket information. St. Kunegunda's Catholic Church in Sugar Camp is holding a Potluck Dinner starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday night at the Sugar Camp Town Hall. Music and raffles will be featured. Call 272-1254 for ticket information.

The Third Annual Pumpkin Carving contest will be held this week in downtown Rhinelander. This year the DRI committee asks that the children paint and decorate their Halloween jack o' lanterns instead of carving so they look really great displayed in the shop windows. Bring your decorated pumpkins on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to Brown Street Books where they will register your pumpkin and direct you to which store they will be displayed in. Judging will be next Friday and the contest results announced downtown next Saturday. Winners by age group will receive gift certificates for downtown businesses. Call Brown Street Books at 362-5111 for more information or questions.

Magic with the Amazing Zachman is happening at the Rhinelander District Library on Monday evening starting at 6:30. Zach performs a very engaging show for the entire family. Have the kids dress in magician's outfits and you may inspire them to learn their own magic tricks.

If you are pulling out your fall and winter clothes and are finding lots of clothes you or your kids have outgrown, or just don't like, take the clothes to the collection boxes in the area for the Kiwanis Clothes Drive to be held November 2 and 3. Call 282-6965 for more information.

A reminder that next Friday starts all the area trick or treating with a “not so scary” Halloween trail at our YMCA of the Northwoods. The event is held outdoors on the trail so dress appropriately. The YMCA is still looking for volunteers for next Friday so call 362-9622 if you can help.

This weekend get your costumes ready for all the area events happening next weekend. Or plan your own Halloween festivities.

The following is a recipe for Howling Hot Grape Punch. You can decorate the outside of the bowl with spooky eyes, a witch nose and scary mouth. Make it as spooky as you like.

Howling Hot Grape Punch

6 cups water

1 quart unsweetened

grape juice

1 cup sugar

1 - 6 oz. can frozen

lemonade

1 - 6 oz. can frozen

orange juice

Mix everything together in a large saucepan and heat until warm. Perfect to serve in mugs. Or serve the punch outside in a cauldron beside an old-fashioned bon fire and tell spooky stories.
