Can you hear it? Things are out there, going bump in the night. The frost is on the pumpkins and many pumpkins, now jack-o-lanterns, keep watch from porches and doorways. Halloween is just around the corner.

Many events are tied to the harvest and Halloween. One classic Halloween event is the Rhinelander Jaycees Haunted House. Located behind the Rhinelander GM Auto Mall at 1672 Menominee Drive, the Haunted House will be open two weekends and Halloween. The building, owned by Rhine Renner, is being loaned to the Jaycees for this event.

Shasta Kuehl, Secretary of the Jaycees and head of the Haunted House Committee, is decorating her 10th haunted house.

“I've helped with the Jaycees since I was in my teens. Money raised goes for community projects. We'd like to get back to doing the spring sandbox fill or the Punt, Pass and Kick contest but right now funds go to the 4th of July celebration. We also help the YMCA, animal shelter and the food pantry.”

On Thursday, Oct. 25, the Haunted House will be open from 7-10 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 19, 20, 26, and 27, the Haunted House will be open from 7-11 p.m. Sunday October 28 is “Light Night,” with the Haunted House open from 3-6 p.m. Halloween, Wednesday, Oct. 31, will see the Haunted House open from 7-10 p.m.

The price for the Haunted House is $5 per person with the “Light Night” event at $3. Volunteers 16 years or older are needed and those from age 16-18 need parental permission. 26 volunteers are needed each night. Contact Eric at 715-360-2899 or Shasta at 715-362-4008 for information.

Harvest celebrations and Halloween go together. If you need to get out and enjoy the season, try the Harvest Dinner at the First United Methodist Church, 724 Arbutus St., on Saturday, Oct. 20. It's a delicious meal for family and friends. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children from age 3-12. Children 2 and under are free. For times and more information, call the church office at 362-2091.

If haunted houses and harvest dinners are not enough, how about a Halloween dance?

The Rhinelander Hodag Twirlers Square Dance Club will have an “All Plus” Halloween Dance Friday, Oct. 26 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the First Methodist Church, 724 Arbutus St. in Rhinelander. Members, non-members and new dancers are welcome. The first four visiting dancers will receive a pass for a free future dance. Contact the Hogans for more information at 282-5714.

And if chainsaws and scary clowns are not to your liking, take your children for a walk on the “Not So Scary” Halloween trail Friday Oct. 26, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Its at the YMCA of the Northwoods. This event is free for everyone. Call 362-9622 for more information.
