New Horizons music Fest to benefit Camp Jorn YMCA

The New Horizons Music Fest is the second installment of the summer for L.E.E.P. and its promoter Richelle Kohl . They've assembled another full day of classic rock music (the first was the Tall Pines Music Jam in Boulder Junction) which will be held in Manitowish Waters on Saturday, August 11.

Richelle's primary goal in creating L.E.E.P. was to produce outdoor shows in northern Wisconsin that would bring older classic rock acts together with their legions of loyal fans for the purpose of entertainment and the for the benefit of non-profit organizations.

“It's a natural fit. If you can kill two birds with one stone, it makes sense, doesn't it?” said Richelle. “Everybody wins.”

On August 11, America, Three Dog Night, and the Charlie Daniels Band are set to take the stage in what will be a full day of music festivities. The gate opens at noon, with the show starting at 12:15 p.m.

America was arguably one of the most successful rock groups of the 70s & 80s. With 16 albums and 19 top ten singles, they soared the charts with songs like “Horse With No Name,” “Ventura Highway,” “I Need You,” “Tin Man,” and “Sister Golden Hair.”

Formed in 1972, America was originally composed of three members, Gerry Beckley, Dan Peek, and Dewey Bunnell. Peek left the band during the height of their success in 1975 never to return. Beckley and Bunnell surged on with legendary record producer George Martin (of Beatles fame) to produce a string of albums.

Today, America maintains a strong following and performs over 100 shows per year.

“We love the interaction with our fans, and enjoy watching the masses sing along,” said Beckley.

With a resume of 14 gold albums, 21 consecutive Billboard Top 40 hits, 3 number #1s, and over 50 million records sold, Three Dog Night hardly needs an introduction. When Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and company take the stage in two weeks, fans are sure to remember all of the music that made this band the most successful act in the U.S. during the late 60s & early 70s. In fact, no one sold more records or more concert tickets during this time period than Three Dog Night.

“One,” “Mama Told Me Not To Come,” “Joy to the World,” “Black and White,” and “Shambala” are just a sampling of songs that they'll be bringing to the New Horizon's stage.

“I'm excited about the opportunity to play up there and I hope the crowd is strong.” said Cory Wells.

Elton John, Randy Newman, Leo Sayer, Harry Nilsson, and Bernie Taupin are just a few of the songwriters who've credited Three Dog Night as a major factor in catapulting their own music careers to stardom after the band first recorded their music.

One could certainly ask where country legend “Charles Edward Daniels” fits into this classic rock party. I mean, when you mention Charlie, you automatically think of “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.”

However, peer into his resume and you quickly realize that this good ole' boy from Wilmington, North Carolina, has a vast history with rock music. Daniels has played on albums with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, and the Eagles. He's a Grammy Award winner in the “Southern Rock” category, and he's collaborated with every major rock music producer in America.

“Yea, I get that. But I've learned that all music has a common origin. Anyone playing good country or good rock can cross over.” said Daniels.

The odyssey in rock music continues in the northwoods in just two weeks. L.E.E.P. is sure to create another first-class production. For more information, please visit www.newhorizonsmusicfest.com.
