More than 250 Rotarians and their families are expected to attend their district's 2007 conference at The Waters of Minocqua the weekend of June 1-3.

Sue Morris of Minocqua assumed the Rotary International District Governorship on July 1, 2006, and the District Conference marks the end of her year-long volunteer post.

As governor, Morris coordinated the community and international service projects of the 42 clubs in district 6220, which includes northeastern Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan.

The purpose of the District Conference is to provide an opportunity to discuss important Rotary matters on both the International and District levels - along with fellowship with other Rotarians, interspersed with fun, and inspirational speakers.

A member of the Lakeland Noon Rotary Club since 1996, Morris said she was delighted that the District Conference was being held in the Lakeland area for the first time. “We are very excited about having the district conference here in Minocqua. We are anticipating about 250 to 300 Rotarians and their families to spend the weekend here. Saturday afternoon has been scheduled as free time so that our guests can shop locally, play golf, enjoy a boat ride or walk one of our many trails. We are very grateful to all the local business owners who have helped our Rotary clubs over the years with our many projects.”

Morris' goals for the year were to have all Rotarians support The Rotary Foundation, increase membership in the clubs, and participate in both a local and an international service project. "As local leaders and volunteers, Rotarians can help find community solutions to local needs," she said. The Rotary Theme this year has been “Lead the Way” and all of the clubs in the district were very involved with their communities, from planting over 150 trees in one community to providing a new halfway house to help people get back on their feet again in another. Rotarians also see the need to help provide clean water, literacy programs and health care around the world.

The two Lakeland Rotary Clubs support several local charitable organizations and undertake community projects, most recently the donation of dictionaries to area 3rd and 4th graders, and a donation to the Town of Hazelhurst for playground equipment.

They also support Rotary International's worldwide projects ranging from Polio eradication efforts to world hunger relief and the support of AIDS orphans in South Africa.

The Rotary Foundation helps provide Ambassadorial Scholarships to college students to study abroad. The Minocqua noon club sent local student Cristi Ann Wendler as an Ambassadorial Scholar to Johannesburg, South Africa. Cristi has since completed her Masters' Degree at UW-Madison and will be returning to Johannesburg to assist a non-profit organization that helps children who are left orphans by the AIDS disease. She would not have had this opportunity to serve the world without the local Rotary Club's support.

A property manager, Morris contributes to the community in many ways and is involved with her church and community promotions. After completing her year as District Governor, Morris has accepted the position of Membership and Extension chair for the Rotary district.

The main objective of Rotary International is service in the community and throughout the world. As volunteers, Rotarians build goodwill and peace, provide humanitarian service, and encourage high ethical standards in all vocations. There are some 1.2 million Rotarians in more than 31,000 clubs in more than 160 countries.

The morning was mild even though it was May 19 and we were in Boulder Junction, just south of our border with Michigan. The occasion was a gathering of fraternity brothers who had attended UW Stout in the mid sixties. In our boat were the ‘Osseo Jinx,' longtime friend Jim Naylor and this scribbler. Jim and his wife, Nancy, have had a summer home in the Boulder area for just over two decades and he wanted to show us Boulder Lake. READ MORE >
