Hodags win own quad invite
by Daily News Sports
Singles players win 11 of 12 matches
Everything has been going well as of late for the Rhinelander boys' tennis team. The Hodags played great on Monday at their own quad, dropping just three points and winning the invite.
Rhinelander defeated Lakeland 7-0, Medford 6-1 and Ashland 5-2 to up its overall record to 10-6.
The Hodag singles players won 11 of the 12 matches they played on the day. Rahul Jain, No. 1, Shane Polzin, No. 3 and Abe Phillips, No. 4 all went undefeated, winning in straight sets.
Against Lakeland, the Hodags didn't lose a set. Jain won 6-0, 6-0, Andy Bognar at No. 2 singles won 6-3, 6-2.
“Andy's game took a step with some nice cross-court volleys and longer rallies,” Rhinelander head coach Bob Heideman said.
Polzin took his opponent 6-4, 6-4. Phillips scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
In doubles play, the No. 1 tandem of Kolin Dean and Jordan Rhode had little trouble, winning 6-2, 6-1. Dan Chojnacki and Steve Trochlil won at No. 2, 6-3, 6-3. Ryan Trembley and Andrew Zoerb were triumphant 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3.
“Ryan and Andrew played some steady tennis, letting Lakeland make the mistakes,” said Heideman.
The four Rhinelander singles players all beat their Medford counterparts, while the No. 3 doubles team of Dan Barbian and Luke Approbato won 6-1, 7-5. Chojnacki and Trochlil had a match, but ending up winning 6-4, 4-6, 10-4.
The Hodags' tightest match of the day came against Ashland.
Jain had a challenge at No. 1 singles, but he came through with a win, 6-0, 6-3.
“Rahul had to work to stay in position because the Ashland's player was very quick and could hit drop shots,” Heideman said. “Rahul has that second level he goes to when he needs it.”
Polzin won 6-2, 6-1, while Phillips kept on winning, 6-2, 6-0.
Chojnacki and Trochlil had another three-set thrill, eventually winning 1-6, 7-6 (3), 10-7.
“They don't give up, they keep on working,” Heideman said of his No. 2 doubles pair.
Dan Rosin and Approbato scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
The Hodags are back on their home court today at 4 p.m. against Antigo. It's the team's final chance to prepare for the conference tourney that starts Friday at a site yet to be determined.

Turkey hunting - challenge greets success
Ask most anyone who has hunted turkeys in Wisconsin about their hunting experiences and you will get a variety of answers. For example, if you ask my hunting partner of many years, “The Osseo Jinx”(Tom Twesme), he will most likely respond that there isn’t anything to it. His usual answer is that you do not need much time to kill a turkey. Ask our son, Craig, or me and our response might be something like “Heck, the darn things must wear armor and they are nearly impossible to kill.” READ MORE >
