Three candidates, incumbent Joe Handrick, current supervisor Dave Huber, and now Minocqua businessman Dean Crist have come forward seeking the position.

According to Minocqua town clerk Roben Haggert, Crist filed papers for both chairman and town supervisor.

“If he wins both he can choose which one he wants,” said Haggert.

Crist owns a Minocqua pizza parlor and was actively involved in the debate surrounding Chippewa spearfishing rights some years ago.

According to an Associated Press story from 1995, Crist was the leader of the anti-treaty group, Stop Treaty Abuse- Wisconsin (STA).

According to the AP story, Crist helped organize demonstrations against off reservation spearfishing at Northwoods lakes in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Handrick, the incumbent, is a former state assemblyman who has been in office for one year. He was appointed to replace Don Gauger who retired from town politics.

Dave Huber, also a Minocqua businessman, is giving up his supervisor seat to run for chairman. He has been on the town board since 2005 and also has experience serving on the Woodruff town board.

Incumbent supervisors Bob Metropulos and Roy Kelling are running for re-election.

In the town of Nokomis, Oneida County Deputy Sheriff Kurt Kopacz is running for town supervisor. He is challenging incumbents John Brottlund and Bette Stillman.

Also in Nokomis, clerk Janet Panzer is being challenged by Wendy Smith.

In other spring election news, Woodruff town chairman Larry Greschner has decided not to run for re-election. Also retiring from town politics is clerk Evelyn Lee. In Little Rice. James Kocher Sr. is challenging Dennis Kelly and Steven Margitan for supervisor. In Stella, Robert Gooden, Scott Eades and Deborah Polinski will compete for a supervisor position while John Hein will take on incumbent David Brunette for chairman.

In Woodruff, Mike Timmons has filed for the chairmanship while Dean Daulton and Linda Bie have signed up for supervisor and treasurer, respectively. Shirley Jacoby is seeking the clerk position.

In Pine Lake, Jim Flory is challenging Jim Berard for the town chairmanship and county board supervisor Orvin “Matt” Matteson is running for town supervisor. Brian Gehrig, an incumbent supervisor, has also taken out papers.

The clerks of the towns of Monico, Schoepke, Sugar Camp and Pelican report all incumbents are running unopposed. Lake Tomahawk has three candidates for town supervisor. They are Jack Dunbar, Shawn Tingley and Richard F. Mazurczak. Incumbent Ed Coffen will face Gary Sowatzka for town chairman. Linda Kay Houghton-Bowen is running unopposed for treasurer.

The Daily News attempted to contact all 21 town clerks. Some of them were not able to respond by press time. Prospective candidates had until 5 p.m. Tuesday to turn in nomination papers.
