Molly Gruett creates winning design

Local artist Molly Gruett has designed the logo that will define Rhinelander's historic downtown district for years to come.

On Wednesday morning, members of Downtown Rhinelander, Inc. along with newly named Executive Director Jeff Hall were on hand at Stevensport Square to announce the winning logo design and present Gruett with a check totaling $300.

Larry Frasier, owner of Frasier's Kitchen Showplace and Vice President of Downtown Rhinelander, Inc., said Gruett's stylized design is not only “easy to read,” but contains all of the elements the group was looking for in a symbol to define the newly named Main Street district.

“Molly's design contains balance and a clean composition,” said Frasier. “It really captures the heart of Rhinelander.”

Gruett, a Wisconsin Department of Transportation employee with a background in graphic design, said she turned to German woodcuts when pulling her design together.

“I knew the courthouse had to be central to the logo and I also wanted it to be representative of the community's German heritage. I wanted the logo to have a traditional feel with a modern twist,” said Gruett.

The logo contains images representative of the courthouse, a smoke stack, trees, a sidewalk and a store front awning embracing the communities rich lumbering history as well as its place in the Northwoods as a center for business and industry.

“It really is a view of Davenport Street looking from the paper mill down to the courthouse,” said Gruett.

“This logo,” said Frasier, “really says that Rhinelander is not a gingerbread community; that we're not just about tourism. We're a real town where real people live and work.”

Frasier said the logo design is “very usable and adaptable to different applications” such as signage, letterhead, and emblems.

The logo design contest, said Frasier, was the brain child of Downtown Rhinelander, Inc. community volunteer Julie Berndt.

OPINION ALL OPINIONS >
Let's look before we leap (08.16.2006)
The conviction that the United States ought to pull out of Iraq is growing. It is not (yet) the opinion of a majority of the American people; polls indicating that a majority is seriously dissatisfied with the way things are going there don't translate readily into a conclusion that we ought to bug out. But the Democrats are slowly pulling together around that proposition, and a few prominent conservatives (including Bill Buckley) have joined them in throwing in the towel. READ MORE >
