On the court: Entering his senior year this fall, homeschooled prep athlete Michael Heise’s sport of choice is basketball. Heise has also competed in cross country, including a first-place finish last year in the open race at the Hodag Invitational. The Rhinelander resident commutes to the Michigan border to play hoops for the private school Marinette Twin City Eagles. The Eagles took third place last season in the small school division of the state private school championships. The school is a Christian school that plays games against other homeschool teams from around Wisconsin.

As a key member of last year’s Eagles basketball team, Heise earned All-State honors as well as being named to the All-Tournament team at the state finals. Heise revealed some of his best memories are playing in RHS varsity coach Rich Fortier’s basketball camps as well as working with former NBA player Dan Godfread at instructional camps. The rising hoops star spends time with friends playing basketball at the YMCA or the Rhinelander Catholic Central gym.

Heise attends Northland Baptist Bible College camp two weeks each year, one week for the summer camp and one week for basketball camp. He is a three-year veteran of the Babe Ruth baseball league and also helps out with some of the Rhinelander Lions activities each year.

Off the court: Heise, along with his three sisters, has been homeschooled since kindergarten. He stated he likes the one-on-one instruction and enjoys group activities and field trips. In the past, the prep athlete has done play-by-play and color broadcasts for several RHS sporting events.

Heise likes to hunt and fish and enjoys bowling, tennis and playing the guitar. Growing up on a farm, the athlete revealed that he knows how to milk a goat. He also hesitantly passed along the enjoyment he gets by going shopping with his sisters.

Heise hopes to go on to college, possibly at Northland Baptist Bible College, to earn a degree in Sports Ministry and play basketball. After college, he would like to become a member of Athletes In Action.
