Town of Sugar Camp developing disc golf course to open in 2006
By Daily News staff
One of the newer sports crazes will soon be available to anyone visiting Sugar Camp.
A disc golf course is in the early planning stages and should be in operation by next spring, according to town clerk John Bigley.
The town board has authorized the addition of an 18 hole disc golf course on a portion of the town's 50 acres of land adjacent to the town hall.
Some of the holes are 200 to 300 feetlong , so you will walk most of the land," said Bigley.
He said he and his wife, Deanna have seen disc golf courses in various communities during their travels and thought this would be a good addition to the offerings already in place in Sugar Camp. The town hall land is home to a baseball field, two softball fields, three soccer fields, two basketball courts, two tennis courts and two volleyball courts on the grounds, as well as a children's playground and picnic pavilions
Plus, said Bigley, young people in the community enjoy the sport and the only place to find it is at Sandy Point Resort in Minocqua. "For our young people who don't drive, this is an inconvenience."
Bigley said disc golf is a family sport that requires little skill or talent.
There will be no charge to use the course, the only requirement will be that participants bring their own discs.
The initial estimate of the project's cost was $18,000, but revised estimates by a course designer have brought that figure to just above $15,000.
"We have volunteers who will do some of the work so the cost may be less for the town," said Bigley.
A citizen's committee is working with course planning and will be collecting donations to help bring down the cost. A grand opening is being planned for the spring.
