The Rhinelander Area Food Pantry is issuing a challenge to the Rhinelander community in hopes of curbing hunger in the Northwoods.

The challenge is simple: The people of Rhinelander give to their food pantry and receive grant money in return.

The Feinstein Foundation, a Rhode Island based philanthropic organization which annually gives away a million dollars a year to food pantries, will share part of its grant with the Rhinelander Food Pantry based entirely on how much the local community is willing to give to the pantry in March and April.

In its seven years of existence, the Feinstein challenge has spurred 3,000 agencies to raise $350,000,000 nationwide. Last year, 32 different agencies in the state of Wisconsin participated in the challenge, raising $1,694,439.

In 2005, the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry (RAFP) will be added to the list of participants and is encouraging the community to give generously to assure that Rhinelander receives a piece of the Feinstein grant.

The Feinstein Foundation was founded by Alan Shawn Feinstein of Rhode Island. Feinstein retired in 1996 from work as a financial writer and advisor and is now focused on a nationwide effort to eradicate hunger.

The new Rhinelander pantry opened its doors last week and manager Lois Blonski says the launch was a complete success.

"It went great and it really feels good to say that," she said, noting that 70 families (94 adults and 53 children) were served. "You would have thought we were in business for 20 years, that's how smooth it went."

The hours for the new pantry, which is currently located in the St. Joseph's Thift Shop on North Brown Street, are 4-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, 8-10 a.m. on Thursdays, and 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

To participate in the Feinstein challenge, send donations to: Rhinelander Area Food Pantry, c/o St. Mary's Foundation, Attn. Patty Fitzpatrick, 2251 North Shore Dr., Rhinelander, WI 54501. The Saint Mary's Hospital Foundation is the fiscal agent for the pantry.
