Rhinelander Food Pantry slated to open in April
By Daily News Staff
The Rhinelander Food Pantry is expected to be up and running by the first week of April, said Oneida County Supervisor Paul Dean, a member of the county's hunger task force.
Dean made the announcement as part of a report to the county board on the status of local efforts to curb hunger in the area.
The new food pantry will be associated with the St. Joe's Thrift Shop, which will move to the former Rueckert's Store building on North Brown Street.
Lois Blonski, current manager of St. Joe's Thrift Shop, will run the new food pantry.
Dean reported that since word of the new pantry spread in mid-December 40 people have lined up to volunteer to work on making the project a success.
"They will pick up and deliver food as well as do other things around the pantry," said Dean. "We are really happy so many people are interested in helping out."
Dean stressed that the new pantry will be a community pantry and no one in need of food will be turned away. Organizers of the new pantry will work in connection with the existing Emergency Food Pantry as well as commodities such as Second Harvest and NewCap. It is hoped the new, full-time food pantry, will relieve some of the burden on the emergency food pantry which is housed at the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Donations will be needed for the food pantry, Dean said, noting that the pantry hopes to feed some 200 people per month.
As part of the discussion on Dean's report, the board also took notice of the contributions of local grocery stores to area food pantries. The stores often donate excess food, supervisor Charles Wickman of Minocqua said.
