High winds rip through Vilas County
High winds and hail caused damage throughout Vilas County Sunday morning, including damage to the roof at Northland Pines High School.
Because of that damage, classes at the high school were canceled for today. Classes were held in grades K-8 as the middle school was not damaged by the storm winds.
As of 9 a.m., there were still more than 5,000 Wisconsin Public Service customers in the Eagle River area without power.
At the height of the storm more than 6,000 customers in the Vilas County and several hundred in the Rhinelander area were without power.
The Vilas County Sheriff's Department received reports of hail ranging from marble-size to golf ball size hail falling in the area of the storm path.
The storm included heavy rain and high wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour.
Wisconsin Public Service crews are expected to work throughout the day restoring power and town road crews are working to open roads blocked by blown down trees.
